If your WordPress plugin is not working or you just want to re-install it without losing data, you can do this very easily without needing to remove the plugin.

You can do this with both active and deactivated plugins.

Step 1: Log in at your WordPress admin dashboard

Step 2: At the dashboard menu just hover the mouse over the Plugins section and click Installed Plugins

Step 3: Click Edit link to the plugin you want to forcefully update.

Step 4: In the editor, find the text:

Version: for example 1.7.2

Then you change to:
Version: 1.7.1

Just change the version just like above, from higher number to lower number.

Step 5: Scroll down at plugin, and click the Update File link. Now go to the Installed Plugins, and you'll find Update Now link just as in photo below, now just click Update Now.
